  1. The Performance Counts legislation being considered in Illinois and which has been put into practice in some other states assumes there is a truly valid and reliable means of quantifying what is meant by a "good teacher". There are so many variables, many of which are not easily measured, which constitute what is meant by a "good teacher". To those who believe that reality is just those things that can be measured, like test scores or student grades, try teaching for a year in a real classroom. I recommend the book "The Death and Life of the Great American School System" by Diane Ravitch for anyone who would like to know more about how our schools really work.

  2. In her book, does Ravitch endorse or recommend ANY evaluation tools? If so which ones, and who else uses them? How do they compare to the Danielson method, or those put forth by Hans Andrews?

  3. This discussion also raises the question on just what evaluation method did Florida settle on? Do they intend to review it on a periodic basis?
Also, what are the evaluation tools used by countries such as China, India, Japan, and Germany? Does Ravitch review them?
